Through course readings, writing assignments, and field trips (for in-person classes) students learn to effectively apply visual analysis and media literacy skills to interpret diverse forms of cultural expression, building confidence in discussing the politics of visuality and forms of representation from the development of perspective in the Renaissance; to photography and film; to video games and virtual reality in the digital age. Focuses on how women’s art attempts to resist normative ideals of femininity, subvert aesthetic hierarchies, and illuminates the intersections of race, gender, and sexual orientation.
