Martha Wheeler, Collodion Witches, picture of Martha Wheeler

The Collodion Witches project encompasses exploratory photographs of contemporary witches and their craft. Through showing the rituals, altars, and objects of their practice, these witches are able to illuminate the hidden subculture that is witchcraft and the complex reasons behind their need for power through spirituality. All photographs are created with rudimentary chemicals using the mid-19th century wet-plate collodion process, providing the photographer with high resolution ambrotype and tintype photographs.

With a 100+ year old camera and portable darkroom built out of the back of her Honda, Martha uses the collodion process to give witchcraft an unexpected platform. Her undergraduate degree studies at UCCS have focused on alternative process photography as well as performance art exploring womxns’ identity and culture. She has exhibited her work in several group shows within the Colorado Springs area.

This event will be hosted in The Dock (located off Centennial 280) with the opening on Friday, October 25, 2019 from 6:00-9:00pm. Martha will be giving an artist talk and q&a at 7:00pm. The show will also be opening for viewing Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 from 1:00-4:00pm.
